FracZone – A Brief History of Proppants

The evolution of proppants has been slow to develop. Since the first frac job using uncoated frac sand in 1947, the advances have gradually increased. Only in the last few decades have proppants made strides into the advanced technology that they are today. As new oil and gas extraction techniques continue to develop, proppants will evolve to provide the solution to increasing the effectiveness of hydraulic fracturing.

New Proppant Technology for Enhanced Oil Recovery

Momentive’s new OilPlus™ curable resin coated proppant is specifically designed for fracturing treatments in oil and liquid-rich reservoirs. The resin system of this patent pending proppant increases the relative permeability to oil in the proppant pack resulting in higher oil production compared to conventional proppants.

Case Histories: Granite Wash, Bakken Shale, and Permian Basin

Momentive conducted extensive research on well production in several plays in North America. The wells that utilized Momentive’s proppant in the Granite Wash provided 66% higher production than the uncoated frac sand (UFS) wells. The average 12 month cumulative oil production for the Momentive wells in the Bakken Shale was 26% higher than UFS. The average 12 month cumulative oil production for the SiberProp™ wells in the Permian Basin was 42% higher than the UFS wells.
